5 Tips to Reduce Your Heating Bill this Winter

5 Tips to Reduce Your Heating Bill this Winter

Is your energy bill too hot to handle, even when it’s -200 outside? It might be time for you to re-examine your electricity consumption habits … and lower your expenses!

Your new objective for the frigid months ahead might be to reduce your heating costs. This is as good for the environment as it is for your wallet … and even for the power grid that is pushed to the max during periods of extreme cold! Because no one wants to live through a brownout in the middle of winter.

We have 5 tips to help you bring down your electricity expenses and save on heating.

1 – Install Programmable Thermostats

Ideally, you should lower the temperature to 180 degrees Celsius at night and bring it up a few degrees during the day. And if this can be done automatically, all the better!

To this end, programmable thermostats are a well known and efficient replacement option for older, less practical thermostats. But, of course, they must be properly programmed! Many among us have these little devices in our residences but prefer to rely on the “maintain temperature” function when, in fact, the technology they employ makes them great allies in our fight against overconsumption.

With a bit of practice, you will quickly learn how to easily program them, especially if you use the same model throughout your house. In this way, you can avoid heating closed unoccupied rooms during the day and preheat them before you arrive home.

2 – Overcome Humidity

Counterintuitively, it is usually too much humidity that chills us to the bone and stirs us to raise the temperature by a few extra degrees Celsius. A dehumidifier and a few simple gestures to avoid adding dampness to the air inside the home remain straightforward solutions. Remember, for example, to activate the range hood when boiling water or switch on the bathroom fan when taking a hot shower.

3- Focus on Energy-Efficient Windows

If you aren’t willing at this time to swap your windows for the ultra-efficient models that are available nowadays, simply remember to close your curtains when the sun has gone down to insulate yourself from the chill. Invest in thick and dense fabric when you redecorated your windows. In a cold region like Quebec, quality drapes can really save you money in the long run!

4- Eliminate Air Leaks

In frosty weather, run your hand over the walls of your home. If you feel any cold air, it means you are losing heat. Note the problematic areas and take the time to seal all the leaks once and for all. Be particularly vigilant around the perimeter of doors and windows as well as around power outlets and light switches. You might be surprised to discover a minor installation error that can be quickly corrected!

5- Reverse You Ceiling Fan’s Rotation Direction

These are essential for circulating hot air that has accumulated near the ceiling downward. Don’t forget to reverse the fans’ rotation to avoid creating a draft around your head (which is, conversely, what is recommended during a heatwave).

One last bit of advice: build your tolerance … by lowering the temperature inside! It's easy and a great occasion to bundle up with a warm blanket when you watch a movie, for example. The golden rule is to not heat the house in winter over the temperature at which you air condition it in summer!

We hope, with these tips, you can avoid getting hot under the collar when next month’s energy bill arrives!
